The two-minute science
What a binaural beat actually is
Play one steady tone in your left ear — say, 200 Hz — and a slightly different one in your right — say, 210 Hz. Your brain hears neither tone on its own; it hears the difference: a gentle 10 Hz pulse. That pulse is the beat. And the brain, given a steady rhythm, tends to lean toward it — a process scientists call entrainment.
Different pulse rates nudge different states: 40 Hz (gamma) for sharp attention, 14 Hz (SMR) for calm alertness, 10 Hz (alpha) for relaxed ease, 6 Hz (theta) for deep rest. Headphones are required — without one tone per ear, there is no beat.
Where the research stands, stated plainly: small studies suggest these pulses can support attention and ease anxiety — tier: real but early. The old solfeggio tones (432, 528 Hz and kin) rest on generations of practice rather than trials — tier: declared practice. Neither replaces care from a professional. Everything here is a wellness practice, offered freely, with its tier out loud.

How a tone is made
- Choose the pulse. The beat is the difference between the two ears — 40 for focus, 14 for steadiness, 10 for calm, 6 for deep rest.
- Choose a comfortable carrier. 180–220 Hz sits easy on the ear. Left ear plays the carrier; right ear plays the carrier plus the pulse. 200 left, 210 right: a 10 Hz calm beat.
- Shape it gently. Ten to fifteen minutes, a slow fade in and out, volume low — it should sit behind your thoughts, never on top of them.
